⟨ 08 ⟩ BRUNEVAL

We were making telescopes for forty years before anyone asked us for a watch. Sextants, meridian circles, instruments built for the survey ships that charted this coast in fog and worse.

A ship cannot know where it is until it knows precisely when it is. The lighthouse authority trusted Valemont chronometers before the watch trade ever did — we have not moved far from the mole since.
